Ribeira: the postcard heart

The medieval riverfront, UNESCO-listed, with its colourful houses stacked above the Douro. Magical at every hour, but steep, busy and pricier. Ideal for a first short trip if you want to step straight into the most iconic Porto.

Baixa & Aliados: central and convenient

The downtown around Avenida dos Aliados, São Bento station and Clérigos. Everything is within walking distance, the metro is at hand, and the choice of hotels is the widest in the city. Our default recommendation for a first stay.

Cedofeita & Miguel Bombarda: creative and local

Just west of the centre, the arts district of galleries, concept stores and brunch spots. More local, often better value, still walkable to the sights. A favourite for travellers who like a neighbourhood feel.

Bonfim: authentic and up-and-coming

East of the centre, a residential, increasingly hip area with tascas, wine bars and lower prices. Great for a longer stay and a taste of everyday Porto.

Vila Nova de Gaia: cellars and the best views

Technically a separate city across the river, Gaia is home to the historic Port wine cellars and the finest views back over Porto’s old town. A scenic, slightly quieter base, a short walk over the Dom Luís I bridge.

Foz do Douro: the seaside option

Where the Douro meets the Atlantic: elegant villas, promenades, ocean sunsets and a calmer pace. Best with a car or for a relaxed stay, 15-20 minutes from the centre by tram or taxi.
