Three days is the perfect length to feel Porto without rushing, long enough for the old town, the cellars and a taste of the Douro. Here is the itinerary we build most often for our travellers, blending the must-sees with a few local detours.

Day 1, The historic heart

Morning: start at São Bento station and its azulejo-tiled hall, climb to the Clérigos tower for the view, and step into the Lello bookshop (book ahead). Lunch in a tasca around the Bolhão market.

Afternoon: wander down to the Sé cathedral and the steep lanes of the Ribeira, the UNESCO riverfront. Evening: dinner by the water, then a stroll across the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge.

Day 2, Gaia and Port wine

Morning: cross the bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia and visit the historic Port wine cellars, Graham’s, Taylor’s, Sandeman, with a tasting. Lunch with a view over Porto’s stacked houses.

Afternoon: ride the cable car, then take a short six-bridges river cruise. Evening: sunset from the Jardim do Morro, one of the best free views in the city.

Day 3, The Douro or the sea

Option A, Douro Valley: a full day in the Douro Valley, with terraced vineyards, a quinta visit and a river cruise. Best by private driver or guided tour.

Option B, Foz & the coast: follow the river to Foz do Douro where the Douro meets the Atlantic, with promenades, lighthouses and seafood lunch. More relaxing, easy by tram.
