The cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia are the natural extension of a visit to Porto. It is here, on the south bank of the Douro, that the great Port wine houses have been ageing their barrels since the eighteenth century. A visit lets you understand how Port is made, discover the differences between Tawny, Ruby, Vintage and LBV, and above all taste exceptional wines in a historic setting.

This guide reviews the most interesting cellars, tasting options, prices and our recommendations for getting the most out of your visit.

Taylor’s: the benchmark cellar

Taylor’s is widely considered the best cellar experience in Gaia. The tour is modern and immersive, with an audiovisual journey through three centuries of Port history. The standard tasting generally includes a Chip Dry white, a Late Bottled Vintage and a 10-year-old Tawny. The panoramic terrace overlooking Porto justifies the visit on its own.

Prices: from €22 for the classic tour. Premium tastings (20-, 30- or 40-year-old Tawny) available. Online booking recommended.

Graham’s: elegance and the view

Graham’s is perched high on the Gaia hillside. The cellar offers polished guided tours and tasting in an elegant setting. The adjoining Vinum restaurant serves gastronomic cuisine with one of the finest views of Porto. Graham’s is the cellar to choose if you want to combine tasting and an exceptional lunch.

Prices: from €18 for the standard tour. Food-and-wine pairing menus available at the restaurant.

Sandeman: the visual icon

Sandeman is instantly recognisable thanks to its black-caped figure (the “Don”). The tour is accessible and well-presented, ideal for a first introduction to Port. The cellars are vast and impressive. The standard tasting includes two wines.

Prices: from €15 for the basic tour. Premium options with aged Tawny available.

Ferreira: the Portuguese story of Port

Ferreira is the only major Port house that has remained entirely Portuguese throughout its history. The tour tells the story of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, a legendary figure of the Douro. The tasting showcases wines with a distinctive profile — fruitier and rounder than those of the British houses.

Prices: from €16. The cellar is well located on the Gaia waterfront, easily reached on foot.

Cálem: the most accessible cellar

Cálem offers an interactive experience with a modern Port museum and evening fado shows. It is the most visited cellar in Gaia, which can mean a wait in high season. The standard tasting includes two wines. The cellar-plus-fado package is a popular option.

Prices: from €17. Cellar + fado package from €27.

Hidden gems: our recommendations

Beyond the big names, several lesser-known cellars offer more intimate experiences: Poças, family-run and welcoming. Ramos Pinto, with a small Art Nouveau poster museum. Churchill’s, independent and specialising in exceptional Tawny. Kopke, the oldest Port house (founded 1638), offering rare Colheita tastings.

These cellars are less crowded and allow more direct interaction with the guides. At Secret Porto, we often include them in our tailor-made tours for a more personal discovery.

Practical tips for visiting the cellars

Two cellars in a half-day is the ideal pace: you will have time to appreciate the tours and tastings without overwhelming your palate. Start with a major house (Taylor’s, Graham’s) then finish with a smaller cellar to vary the experience.

Cellars are open year-round, generally from 10 am to 6 pm (7 pm in summer). Book online in high season. Most offer tours in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

To reach Gaia from Porto, walk across the Dom Luís I bridge on the lower deck (5 minutes from the Ribeira) or take the metro to Jardim do Morro station.

Between €15 and €25 for a standard tour with a tasting of 2 to 3 wines. Premium tastings (20-year-old Tawny and above, Vintage, Colheita) range from €40 to €80.
